I just thought I’d mention that there is a WP plugin called Simple Trackback Validation that goes some way towards fending off trackback spam. Readers can get it here

I’ve used it on my WP sites and although simple it’s pretty effective.

It’s my Nucleus blog that seems to get hit with huge amounts of trackback spam but the plugin Matt mentioned does a sterling job of blocking them, just leaving me with a one click delete. I’m currently seeing around 300 to 400 attempts per day!

@Matt: No, Wordpress doesn’t automatically check for a link on the page provided. I think SpamKarma does.

However, even that’s not foolproof because some spammers set up dynamic pages that only exist a short time. So, the link is there when SpamKarma checks.

Does wordpress not first check for a link on the page of the URL provided? The plugin for NucleusCMS does.

I don’t know why, but even without PPP posts I’m getting targeted with trackback spam.

Yes– I should mention, htaccess is for Apache. I don’t know what happens on windows servers. But, you can always remove the code, so there isn’t much danger.

I just found this in my referrals for scribblescratch.com! I’m going to give this a try and I’ll let you know how the .htaccess thing works out!

I’m not sure how it will work (or if it will) on the blog with the most severe problems because it’s on a windows server. I’ve had problems using .htaccess on it in the past but it never hurts to try!
