Want a thumbsdown from a Stumbler?
Create a blinking banner demanding a thumbs up!

Muhammad Saleem recently gave seven reasons for giving a thumbs-down at stumbleupon.
I thought his list was thorough until I came across this: A page that included a large blinking banner asking Stumblers for a thumbs up! Yes, that big red banner blink, blink, blink, blinks, blinks!

Thumbs Down For Blinking

OMG! Talk about giving me a reason to vote thumbsdown!Tags:

Wow, I must have been lucky that I haven’t seen this so far. I just don’t understand the mentality of webmasters who would do that - surely everyone must understand the basic laws of human nature that state that when you try to force somebody to do something, you’re just pushing them to do the opposite!

I too would give that a quick thumbs down, but I have this post a thumbs up :-)

Were they using the referer string? I think the banner is a bit OTT but I dont see anything so wrong in trying to influence the reader a little further….I guess its all in the delivery of course :D

@rob. I asked myself the same question. I cut and pasted the url in another browser, and they weren’t using a referrer string. So, everyone got the huge blinking banner at the top.

I also don’t mind stumble prods at the bottom, or buttons etc. But a huge banner at the top? And blinking at a rate of once a second?! Oh my.

Lol, wonderful :P. I already tend to find the thanks notices annoying which some like to place when you come in either through google, digg, whatever. I could care less on how I came in, I am just there for the content. But big flashing banners promoting to stumble it or whatever more, I’d immediately thumb down and not even bother to read the page anymore.

People are not prone to doing what they are told as my “don’t click this” experiment showed.
